And while on the topic of church and state, I’m also baffled by the Ten Commandments debacle (Alabama again!!!). I don’t really understand why anyone would take serious offense to the public posting of Ten Commandments. Perhaps I could sympathize a bit if this judge were locking people up for not remembering the Sabbath. But a simple display?

On the other hand, I’m also baffled by the Christian response. Who really believes that anything is lost by the removal of these commandments? We live under a new deal (covenant being the official lingo) which acknowledges that law in and of itself is powerless. The law represented by the ten commandments is one of sin and death. Jesus brought a law of freedom and life.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering (Romans 8:1-3)

While you’re on the internet anyway, go ahead and read the whole chapter. You know you want to.
